More unfortunate injury news for the Falcons: third-string QB, Kurt Benkert, is heading to the IR after receiving a second opinion on a toe injury.
Some not great injury news out of Flowery Branch today. The #Falcons are placing Kurt Benkert on IR. In a corresponding move, they have signed offensive guard Tommy Doles. https://t.co/tAJylThHYJ

The injury forced Benkert to leave Thursday’s Hall-of-Fame Game, where the undrafted quarterback out of Virginia, looked fairly impressive. He threw for 181 yards and a touchdown on 34 attempts with 19 completions. However, with Matt Schaub on the roster, it was always a longshot Benkert was going to make the team. It’s likely he will attempt to take over the Falcons backup QB role again next year.
Dan Quinn was already aware the injury was going to knock Benkert out for a while, so Atlanta brought in a familiar face in Matt Sims. Aside from being on the Falcons practice squad from 2015-2017, Simms was also the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Legends before the league fell apart. His performance in the AAF; however, left much to be desired.
Taking Benkert’s roster spot will be Tommy Doles – an undrafted free agent out of Northwestern. He was a three-year starter for the Wildcats and was a senior captain in 2018. Initially, Doles signed out of college with the Chicago Bears.
