The Falcons are shuffling around their roster after OTAs, and newly signed Jeff Holland has already been released after filling the roster spot left open from the Julio Jones trade.
The Falcons made a bunch of moves:
SIGNED:
DL John Atkins (opted out last year in Detroit)
WR/Returner Jeff Badet
DL Shareef Miller
DL George ObinnaRELEASED:
WR Greg Dortch
DL Eli Ankou
LB Alani Pututau
LB Jeff Holland— Michael Rothstein (@mikerothstein) June 17, 2021
John Atkins probably isn’t the former UGA defensive lineman that fans were hoping for, i.e., Geno Atkins, but he’s a solid addition. The former Patriot and Lion is a pure 0-technique — nose tackle — standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing over a whopping 320 pounds. Typically, in a base odd front, his role would be to line up on the center and work both A gaps. He’ll bring competition to the position where he’ll compete with Tyeler Davison for a spot on the roster.
If he made the roster, you have to imagine that Atkins would serve as depth in run situations to take pressure off of guys like Grady Jarrett and command some double teams. Greg Dortch was a guy that Falcons fans were waiting on to break out as a return man, but his days in Atlanta seem to be over. Alani Pututau was a guy that I thought had a chance of making the roster as a small-school standout, but he has also been released.
