The Falcons’ biggest free agent deal this offseason went to Jessie Bates III, an All-Pro safety that signed a four-year, $64.02 million deal; the details of that contract have been revealed:

From Spotrac: “Jessie Bates III signed a 4 year, $64,020,000 contract with the Atlanta Falcons, including a $18,000,000 signing bonus, $36,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $16,005,000. In 2023, Bates III will earn a base salary of $1,080,000 and a signing bonus of $21,920,000, while carrying a cap hit of $6,560,000 and a dead cap value of $36,000,000.”
Bates’ final year in 2026 will be before his age-30 season, and the Falcons have a potential out following the 2024 season that will leave dead cap hits of $10.96 million in 2025 and $5.48 million in 2026. If, for some reason, Bates falls short of living up to his contract, the Falcons can get out from underneath it pretty painlessly.
Bates’ cap hit in 2023 is only $6.56 million, which gives the Falcons a ton of wiggle room this offseason to make more additions. However, that cap hit rises substantially in 2024 to $18.48 million and again in 2025 to $19.48 million, then tops out in the final year of his deal at $19.5 million.
