The legal tampering period has come and gone, free agency day 1 has come and gone, and Falcons Free Agent LB De’Vondre Campbell remains unsigned.
Atlanta bolstered their defense by picking up Dante Fowler Jr. yesterday, but a hole remains at linebacker. Options like Devon Kennard have signed elsewhere, and this free agent class is thinning out. Back in January, Drew Rosenhaus said that Campbell and the Falcons were in discussion for an extension. Maybe the grass isn’t greener on the other side for Campbell after all?
Campbell is by no means a perfect player. He’s been frustrating at times and excellent at others, especially when it comes to coverage.
He has his share of highlights:
What an effort by De’Vondre Campbell to set the edge against 1st team All-Pro LT Andrew Whitworth. His days of playing the SAM are not over. pic.twitter.com/1UigfqBAw3

And some not so highlights…
This is one hell of a play from Jameis Winston and Breshad Perriman. Perriman has been impressive the last month pic.twitter.com/HlHCP39NaE

Regardless, Campbell seems to not be getting the offers he was expecting. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe he’s started a bidding war. Maybe he has so many good offers he can’t decide. Maybe only the Bengals and Dolphins want him on one year deals. Regardless, if he’s smoothed things over with the Falcons front office and would come at a decent price, could he come back to Atlanta?
I just don’t think that’s going to happen. Teams with gobs of cap space are usually not very good, and they’ll be willing to overpay for a rangy linebacker who can cover. I think the chances of Campbell coming back are much better than what they were a month ago, but I still don’t see it happening.
