In some good news for Falcons fans, Atlanta is interviewing former Bears defensive coordinator and Broncos head coach Vic Fangio for their defensive coordinator opening:
The #Falcons are interviewing long-time respected defensive coordinator Vic Fangio for their vacant DC job today, sources say. The former #Broncos head coach served as defensive consultant with the #Eagles this season. Would be one of the top candidates in any DC search.

Even with a bad tenure in Denver, there’s no doubt Fangio is one of the best defensive minds in football. Here’s how Fangio stacked up the last time we saw him as a defensive coordinator:
—
2018 Bears
17.69 PPG Allowed (1st in NFL)
3.8 Rushing Yards Per Attempt (4th in NFL)
80 Rushing Yards Per Game Allowed (1st in NFL)
5.7 Passing Yards Per Attempt (1st in NFL)
219.7 Passing Yards Per Game (7th in NFL)
50 Sacks (3rd in NFL)
—
Fangio’s head coaching tenure didn’t last long, but a lot of that was in part to his offenses being abysmal. During his last season in Denver in 2021, Fangio was still fielding an elite defense.
—
2021 Broncos
18.9 PPG Allowed (3rd in NFL)
4.3 Rushing Yards Per Attempt (13th in NFL)
111.3 Rushing Yards Per Game Allowed (15th in NFL)
7.1 Passing Yards Per Attempt (15th in NFL)
214.8 Passing Yards Per Game (8th in NFL)
36 Sacks (19th in NFL)

In the year when he was fired, Fangio’s defense was allowing the third least points per game in the NFL. If he can focus on being a defensive coordinator and give the Falcons what he gave the Bears in 2018, the Falcons will be fielding a respectable defense for the first time in a long time.
