Before he re-signed with the Jets, Jamien Sherwood was expected to draw significant interest from the Falcons in free agency, according to Jordan Schultz.
Considering the ties to the coaching staff, many thought it was a great fit. In fact, Schultz went as far as to say former Jets coaches and current Falcons coaches Jeff Ulbrich and Mike Rutenberg were “eager to reunite” with Sherwood.
Sherwood was coming off a breakout campaign in his first year as a starter, recording 158 tackles, ten of which went for loss, with two sacks. He’s a true three-down linebacker who just seems to be tapping into his full potential as he hits free agency.
The Falcons are clearly interested in bringing in another off-ball linebacker because not only were they interested in Sherwood, but they’re also interested in free agent Dre Greenlaw, per Michael Silver.
Both are athletic linebackers. However, unlike Sherwood, Greenlaw is coming off a brutal injury. During the 2023 Super Bowl, he tore his Achilles and was limited to only two games this past season. Before then, he was among the best players at his position, racking up 120 tackles, five for loss, four passes defended, and a sack.
The Falcons are clearly not content with Kaden Elliss and Troy Andersen. With so many needs elsewhere, specifically in the trenches, this seems like a poor allocation of resources, but it’s not hard to see why they’re not satisfied with Elliss and Andersen.
The latter has struggled to stay on the field, and the former is more one-dimensional than Greenlaw or Sherwood. We will see who the Falcons add at the position.
