Everyone is expecting the Eagles to route the Falcons following their Week 1 performance.
Philly beat a very good Packers team in Brazil in which they overcame multiple turnovers. Meanwhile, the Steelers beat the Falcons in Atlanta without even scoring a touchdown. Based on that, I’d say, yeah, the Eagles should easily beat the Falcons.
Fortunately, that’s not how games work. The NFL is a weird league, and upsets happen all of the time. For instance, two of the most impressive victories of the season came from division foes who were underdogs — the Saints over the Cowboys and the Buccaneers over the Lions.
In a different vein, the Falcons with a new quarterback and first-time play caller played a good football team in the Steelers. Atlanta’s defense did enough in most instances to win the game, but Zac Robinson and Kirk Cousins fell short in the second half.
With that week of experience, there’s a scenario where the Falcons work much more efficiently on offense. It’s the perfect opportunity to change the narrative. Right now, nobody is thinking about the Falcons. Everyone is enamored with Klint Kubiak, Derek Carr, and the Saints. Rightfully so.
New Orleans looks like the team to beat through two games in the NFC South, while the three-time defending division champion Bucs look just as good as they did last year. The entire NFL world is watching tonight; the Falcons have an excellent opportunity to change the narrative around the team.
Raheem Morris won the offseason. Now, it’s time for him to put up or shut up because if the Falcons fall in Week 2, the road to the postseason gets extremely rocky with the Chiefs looming in Week 3, Saints in Week 4 and Bucs in Week 5.
