At the NFL Combine, the athletic feats of players are going to grab all of the headlines. But oftentimes, it’s the individual interviews that can improve a player’s draft stock the most. The Falcons are planning to meet with at least 45 potential draftees in Indianapolis this week, some of which are coming out of their own backyard in Athens.
“We actually met with some of those Georgia players last night,” Fontenot said. “A lot of really good players, not just the University of Georgia, who is obviously one of the best teams in the country and have done an unbelievable job, and then also just being from Georgia. I love youth sports, high school sports, and getting to get out and see those young men. I believe it’s the best in the country.”
Terry Fontenot is right. Per capita, nobody puts out NFL caliber talent quite like the Peach State. However, the Georgia Bulldogs program is the focal point. Nobody produces NFL ready talent — especially on the defensive side of the ball — like Kirby Smart. They come into the league prepared to make an immediate impact, and the Falcons have passed on a number of stars in the draft.
For an organization that’s desperately trying to find an identity defensively, the Falcons don’t have to look very far. Fixing the defense could be as simple as creating a pipeline between Athens and Atlanta.
