Falcons GM talks 2024 QB free agent and draft classes

The Falcons 2024 season is going to hinge on what kind of play they get out of the quarterback position, so the offseason will be defined by who the club targets.

In an interview with Steve Wyche and James Palmer, Terry Fontenot was asked about the prospective Falcons quarterbacks, and Atlanta’s GM highlighted the breadth of talent.

“Good depth, no doubt. There’s some really good players and some different flavors so there’s different types of quarterbacks that can do some different things,” Fontenot said. “It’s a really good group of quarterbacks this year not only in the draft but like I said free agency, via trade, there’s some really talented players available and we’re excited to attack that.”

There really is a wide variety of skill sets.

The draft features a do-it-all prospect at the top in Caleb Williams that will surely be out of the grasp of the Falcons, but the next two prospects are equally talented.

Jayden Daniels may have the highest ceiling of the class because of his mobility. Drake Maye offers a lot of the same things that Williams does in the way many describe Patrick Mahomes. J.J. McCarthy isn’t as flashy as the other three but is a gamer, plays within a system, and offers a complete skill set.

In free agency, Kirk Cousins and Baker Mayfield offer experience more than anything and would give the Falcons easily the best odds to win the division. However, the upside is limited.

On the trade market, Justin Fields offers a bit of both. He would provide more in 2024 than some rookie quarterbacks and not as much as veterans like Cousins and Mayfield. However, he offers upside that the free agent veterans do not.

The Falcons will have several options to pick from, but it will be up to Zac Robinson to tailor his offense to whichever signal caller the club acquires.
