In his post-draft presser, Terry Fontenot said that he and Arthur Smith had a lot of confidence in Matt Ryan from the very beginning.

After many draft speculators thought Atlanta would take a quarterback with the fourth pick, it seems the national media has underestimated the faith that the Falcons’ brass had in Matty Ice. Fontenot and Smith’s decision to go with Pitts shows exactly how they think of Ryan’s place on this team.
Drafting a tight end with the fourth overall pick — the highest in NFL draft history — shows that the team is built to win now. But taking Pitts doesn’t mean Atlanta is “going all in” because in three or four years, when Ryan inevitably leaves Atlanta, Pitts will be in year three or four, entering his prime. A tight end is a quarterback’s best friend, and one this talented will ease the transition for any quarterback.
