With the Falcons searching for a Jimmy Lake replacement, I need fans to temper expectations.
They’ve officially begun the process by getting Lou Anarumo on the books for an interview this week, but as fans usually do, a lot of people in Atlanta are aiming for something much higher.
The hottest defensive coordinator candidate is Robert Saleh, and it’s not close. For some reason, Falcons fans believe the team has a puncher’s chance at hiring Saleh, but I’m here to tell you that’s a pipe dream.
Not only is he getting head coaching interviews, but he will be the most coveted candidate for defensive coordinator openings. Hell, there are some teams without an opening that will be interested in Robert Saleh. He’s that damn good.
So, let me ask you something: why would Robert Saleh come to Atlanta, featuring a defense that is devoid of talent and a coaching staff that could be fired as soon as next offseason if the team doesn’t make the playoffs? You’re right, he wouldn’t.
There’s virtually no way the Falcons attract a top tier defensive coordinator unless Raheem Morris gets that silver tongue going and somehow pulls a rabbit out of his hat.
Falcons fans need to wrap their heads around what kind of candidate this job will attract, and it’s guys like Lou Anarumo, who is a fine coordinator but nothing special. The simple fact of the matter is that it doesn’t matter who the Falcons hire to coordinate the defense until the Jimmys and Joes change. This unit needs more talent.
