Falcons fans may finally get their wish for Rich McKay to be removed from his duties in the organization if Arthur Blank hires Bill Belichick.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, a source within the team predicts that “Belichick would take the job only if McKay is completely frozen out of football operations.”
Rich McKay is the single constant (other than Arthur Blank) in the Falcons’ recent failures. Whether it’s Arthur Smith, Dan Quinn or Mike Smith, McKay has been the one consistent theme in Atlanta.
McKay is going unscathed in all of this. Arthur Smith got the axe, and Terry Fontenot deserves partial blame, but McKay not even being mentioned and once again sitting on the side of the King’s throne is unsettling. Most Falcons fans realize his role in all of this, but the fact that Florio is the only national pundit to call McKay’s role out is ridiculous.
Florio added that “McKay likely won’t be inclined to support it (hiring Belichick). Belichick, per the source, and McKay have been at odds in the past over rules changes, given McKay’s role as chair of the Competition Committee.”
Before the Falcons hired Arthur Smith, Rich McKay was said to be not involved in day-to-day operations. At the press conference following Smith’s termination, it was revealed that McKay was involved heavily in day-to-day operations.
The structure of the organization is irregular, and Bill Belichick is likely not the only head coach candidate who would have demands coming to Atlanta. Arthur Blank has a difficult decision ahead of him as Florio points out.
“Blank would have to decide whether he’s willing to do that to get the man who wiped out a 28-3 deficit in Super Bowl LI, propelling the Patriots past Blank’s Falcons.”
Rich McKay is literally Grima Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings. If you don’t get the reference, I implore you to look it up and laugh. The Falcons would be better off without him, but I doubt Blank makes the correct decision for the franchise.
