Falcons: ESPN pundit thinks NFC South race is between Saints, Bucs

NFL: SEP 29 Saints at Falcons

The Falcons sit atop the NFC South with a 4-2 record, followed by the Bucs, who also own a 4-2 record. Atlanta holds the advantage in the division with a 3-0 mark and the head-to-head compared to Tampa Bay’s 1-1 record in the NFC South.

Meanwhile, the Panthers continue to flounder, and the Saints’ torrid stretch continued last week. New Orleans began the year firing on all cylinders, with convincing victories over Carolina and Dallas, prompting some to declare Dennis Allen’s team a Super Bowl contender.

Since then, Allen’s club has lost four straight, including two to the Falcons and Bucs. Without Derek Carr, New Orleans will struggle. Hell, even with Carr, they’ll struggle because they don’t have a great roster and have an even worse head coach.

Saints fans are reeling, but there’s one lone voice still picking the 2-4 Saints to win the division over the 4-2 Falcons and Bucs — Tim Hasselbeck. The ESPN pundit was wrapping up the Sunday slate with Scott Van Pelt and said he believes it’s a two-team race between Tampa Bay and New Orleans, with the latter being the best team in the division when healthy.

This is one of the wildest takes I’ve seen from a prominent pundit on national television in a long time.

The Saints are closer to firing their head coach than winning the NFC South, and I don’t even think that’s a very hot take. New Orleans is in a complete free fall, losers of four straight. The 2-0 start was a fluke, and these are the same issues that have continued to plague the Saints.

What’s most concerning, at least for New Orleans fans, is the “defensive” head coach continues to trot out a subpar defense. It’s well past time to pull the plug on a head coach who has proven to be a loser. The Saints have enough talent to win seven or eight games, but the Falcons and Buccaneers are clearly the two teams competing for the NFC South title at this point in the season.
