Falcons’ dream of a Trey Hendrickson trade appears dead

NFL: NOV 03 Raiders at Bengals

The Falcons have had two goals in recent history — fix the pass rush and find a long-term solution at quarterback. With the latter hopefully figured out in the form of Michael Penix Jr., the former is at the forefront of everyone’s minds in Atlanta.

The pass rush has been a weakness of the club’s defense for as long as I can remember. Terry Fontenot has taken shots to fix it, but nothing has worked out as the Falcons hoped, whether it was the multiple Day 2 draft picks or the Matthew Judon trade. The one hope we had for the Falcons to make a significant addition was a Trey Hendrickson trade, and that dream appears dead.

According to Dianna Russini, with the Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins deals done, the Bengals have turned their attention to their star pass rusher and will try to work out a new deal.

Everyone around the NFL was always shocked when the Bengals gave Trey Hendrickson permission to seek a trade. A guy that has 35 sacks over the last two seasons doesn’t usually ever become available. It’s rare, and it’s even more questionable, considering Cincinnati’s historically bad defense this past season.

It was probably never going to happen because teams, no matter how poorly run, don’t let players like Trey Hendrickson out of town. The Falcons will once again be looking for a committee approach when it comes to improving their pass rush.
