While the Falcons didn’t get any better at this year’s trade deadline, their Week 10 opponents got worse following the trade of Marshon Lattimore. The Commanders sent the Saints third, fourth, and sixth-round picks in exchange for Lattimore and a fifth-rounder.
The Saints fired Dennis Allen on Monday morning after their seventh straight loss and named special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi the interim coach. The Falcons draw their rivals in a state of turmoil.
New Orleans’ salary cap situation has been well documented, and it finally seems they’re accepting their fate of a total rebuild. The Saints are entering a multi-year teardown of an aging, expensive roster. Then, they’ll have to build it back up.
It all began with Allen and Lattimore, the latter of whom has been the subject of trade speculation for the last year. Lattimore restructured his deal earlier this year, so the cap savings for the Falcons rivals in 2024 are minimal.
Lattimore’s dead cap hit in 2025 is what’s truly staggering and illustrates the mess the Saints find themselves in. The Pro Bowl cornerback will count against the New Orleans 2025 salary cap by a jarring $31.6 million.
Marshon Lattimore has been a thorn in the sides of Falcons fans since entering the league some years ago. Getting him out of the division is nothing but a net positive, especially with Atlanta traveling to New Orleans this weekend.
Unfortunately, they haven’t dodged him completely. The Falcons will travel to the D.C. area to take on Lattimore’s new team in the Commanders, facing old friend Dan Quinn in the process.
