There was a lot of people expecting the Falcons to add to their depth at safety during the draft. Originally, it looked like they did not address the situation, but Demontae Kazee, Atlanta’s 5th-round selection has been listed as a safety for the Falcons mini-camp.
ESPN’s draft analyst, Mel Kiper, believes Kazee is one of the most underrated cornerbacks in this year’s draft and that he could have an immediate impact on the Falcons defense as a rookie. Kazee was a ballhawk at San Diego State, recording 15 interceptions on his way to back-to-back Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year awards. It looked like Kazee could pan out as a nickel corner for Atlanta, but given the Falcons incredible depth at the postion, it should come as no surprise to see Kazee listed as a safety.
Dan Quinn still believes thoroughly in Ricardo Allen as this year’s free safety, but he also loves competition, and that is what Kazee brings to the table.
