Falcons decline to name starting QB against Giants

Despite Kirk Cousins’ abysmal play, Raheem Morris has shown unwavering faith in the 13-year veteran. But after yet another dreadful performance against the Raiders, it’s evident a change could be coming in the near future.

When asked who the Falcons will start at quarterback on Sunday against the Giants, Morris declined to answer, stating the team is still evaluating the situation.

This is a much different response than Raheem Morris has provided in previous weeks, when he has completely shutdown the notion that there is any quarterback controversy in the building. However, we are all watching the same thing.

Kirk Cousins has one touchdown and nine interceptions over the last five games. He’s not trusting his instincts, leading to shoddy decision-making and turnovers. Moreover, he’s physically lost a step. Cousins’ arm strength, which has never been his strong suit, is declining, and his mobility is non-existent.

It’s a nightmare scenario for the Falcons on the one hand. This is an organization that just got out of cap hell and thought the addition of a veteran like Cousins would put the team over the top, which is why they handed him $100 million in guarantees. However, they severely misjudged just how difficult it might be for a 36-year-old quarterback to return from a torn Achilles and still be the same guy he was during the first half of last season.

On the bright side, unlike most teams, the Falcons have a pretty damn good backup plan. Michael Penix Jr. was selected 8th overall and is the most experienced rookie quarterback from this year’s class. He’s had the opportunity to sit and learn behind a veteran for nearly an entire season. There is no reason Penix shouldn’t be prepared for this moment, and if his name gets called on Sunday, he’ll have a chance to quickly earn the adoration of the Falcons faithful by potentially leading them to the playoffs for the first time in seven years.
