Following a Week 1 performance that every member of the organization and fans would like to forget, the Falcons announced they have created nearly $5 million in cap space by restructuring the contract of David Onyemata.
Teams creating cap space via restructures to begin the season:
Seahawks via WR DK Metcalf: $9.5M
Vikings via TE T.J. Hockenson: $7M
Falcons via DT David Onyemata: $4.85M
Cowboys via OT Terence Steele: $4.5M

The move gives the Falcons around $12 million in cap space to play with, more than enough to make significant improvements to the roster now or in the future.
Perhaps that means a move could be coming down the pike before the Falcons Week 2 matchup with the Eagles on Monday night, but I wouldn’t expect anything too substantial this early in the season. Atlanta certainly has some needs, another cornerback would greatly benefit the secondary, and even after the addition of Matthew Judon, the pass rush could still use a little more juice, as we saw against the Steelers on Sunday.
Atlanta’s defense was the lone bright spot in Week 1, but the challenges lying ahead of them will give everyone a better idea of just how good this group can be. The Eagles’ offense had a field day with the Packers’ defense in Brazil. Patrick Mahomes awaits in Week 3, and Weeks 4 and 5 pit the Falcons against the Saints and Buccaneers, two division rivals that looked in midseason form this past weekend.
