It is draft week, and the rumor mill is flowing, especially for the Falcons.
Not only is Atlanta considered a wild card for Thursday’s first round, but there’s also a dark cloud hanging over the head of the organization.
Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the expectation is a punishment for the Falcons’ role in tampering with Kirk Cousins will be handed down soon. With the NFL investigating Atlanta as well as the Eagles for their role in tampering with Saquon Barkley, Schefter’s sources believe the punishment for the Falcons will be more severe.
Still, there’s the bigger story of the actual draft, and there’s been a flood of new information. Over the weekend, betting odds shifted for the favorite to go 8th overall. It was Dallas Turner, but Laiatu Latu has overtaken the Alabama product, who has been the expected pick for much of the offseason.
Most recently, it’s been Adam Schefter who is adding fuel to the fire, reporting that Michael Penix could be Atlanta’s pick.
“One NFL general manager said he believes “there is an undercurrent of support for Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix,” even though his team doesn’t have a first-round grade on either. This particular general manager said he believes both Penix Jr. and Nix are Day 2 picks. Some teams disagree, and there now is speculation Penix could go as high as No. 8 to the Falcons,” Schefter says.
I would be quite surprised if the Falcons go with a quarterback for their most valuable draft pick just after signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million deal.
I would consider Dallas Turner, Laiatu Latu, Jared Verse, Rome Odunze, Malik Nabers, Quinyon Mitchell, and Terrion Arnold all to be more likely than Michael Penix or any other quarterback prospect.
