In his first year as a general manager, Terry Fontenot showed precisely why he was so valuable to the Saints organization as Director of Pro Personnel by signing a potential MVP candidate to an incredibly team-friendly deal. Cordarrelle Patterson signed a one-year contract worth $3 million and has completely outperformed that figure; in fact, the former All-Pro return specialist is Pro Football Focus’s highest-graded running back.

The Falcons beat the Jaguars on Sunday because of stingy defense and the legs of Patterson, who finished the day with 135 total yards and two touchdowns on 18 touches. Unlike other weeks, most of his production came on the ground. Patterson finished the day breaking several personal bests, carrying the ball 16 times for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

In 10 games this year, the 30-year-old veteran has rushed for 411 yards on 93 carries, scoring four times on the ground. He’s also hauled in 41 receptions for 500 yards and five more scores, bringing his totals to 134 total touches for 911 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns. Patterson’s physical running style, coupled with his receiving ability, has completely transformed this Falcons offense. Revolutionizing how the league sees him, Atlanta’s front office and coaching staff should be credited for their vision for Patterson. He’s one of the most effective offensive players in the league right now, and PFF agrees.
