The Falcons have decisions to make regarding the futures of Chris Lindstrom and Kaleb McGary. Teams around the league have until May 2nd to decide whether they will pick up fifth-year options for their 2019 first-round picks, and the league set the salaries that go with those options:
- 14. Guard Chris Lindstrom, Falcons: $13,202,000
- 31. Tackle Kaleb McGary, Falcons: $13,202,000
Given that Lindstrom is one of two linemen worth a damn on the roster, fans can fully expect the Falcons to pick up his $13.2 million fifth-year option. Atlanta will then have to work out a contract extension for the Boston College product because there’s no way the Falcons can continue to let their good players walk in free agency. With the projected fourth-most cap space next offseason, the Falcons are in a great position to keep Lindstrom throughout his prime.
McGary is a completely different story. I wouldn’t be entirely shocked if the Falcons picked up his fifth-year option, especially if they don’t address the tackle position in the draft, but I still think they won’t be bringing McGary back. He just hasn’t developed into anything more than a below-average tackle, and the Falcons can’t continue to trot him out there.
