The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Falcons are expected to be actively pursuing a pass rusher.
With just six sacks on the season, it’s clear that Atlanta’s pass rush is underperforming. The current in-house options haven’t delivered. Maybe Matthew Judon improves as the season progresses, maybe Arnold Ebiketie takes a leap, or maybe Jimmy Lake finds a solution to manufacture pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
But realistically, the odds aren’t in their favor. The Falcons’ pass rush needs more than a single player to turn things around; it’s going to require a multi-year investment. That said, there’s no reason why the team can’t start the process before the November 5th deadline.
Of the players rumored to be available, Falcons fans have their eyes on Za’Darius Smith, and with good reason. He’s a veteran pass rusher on a struggling team likely to be a seller.
While Myles Garrett isn’t on the table, Smith could be a realistic target. He’s on an affordable contract this season, and his 2025 salary is largely non-guaranteed, making him a low-risk option.
The Falcons could potentially trade a Day 3 draft pick, which they haven’t utilized well under Terry Fontenot. If Smith contributes, they could retain him for 2025. If not, they can move on with minimal loss.
So, what would it cost? According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, “A decent Day 3 pick for Smith probably will get the job done, from what I’m hearing.”
A fourth- or fifth-round pick for Za’Darius Smith in today’s market seems like the appropriate price. It might be a bit rich for my blood, but the supply and demand of the market is what it is. The Falcons are going to have to pay to play at this year’s trade deadline.
