Falcons bring back key defensive piece

Mike Hughes Falcons

With Grady Jarrett and Drew Dalman headed to Chicago, the Falcons have a ton of holes to fill, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. The middle of the defensive line is lacking experience and EDGE rusher has been a problem in Atlanta for more than a decade. The secondary also has some concerns, but some of that was alleviated today, as NFL insider Jordan Schultz is reporting the Falcons are finalizing a three-year, $18 million contract to bring back Mike Hughes.

A.J. Terrell hasn’t had a consistent running mate across from him since he was drafted, but Hughes surprised a lot of people with his play in his second season with Atlanta. He was one of the few bright spots on defense that did not regress under first-year defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake, who was relieved of his duties at the end of the season.

Three years and $18 million is starter money, so it’s evident they believe Hughes’ play is sustainable moving forward. He likely slots in as the starter opposite of Terrell; although, he does have experience playing nickel as well.

Even after the signing, the Falcons still have a lot of work to do in the secondary. They still need a starting nickel and some more depth, and the safety position next to Jessie Bates III is up in the air. DeMarcco Hellams is an option, but at the very least, worthwhile competition needs to be brought in.
