The NFL awards additional draft picks to organizations that let go of a certain amount of talent in free agency, compared to the number of acquisitions. Those teams with a net loss from the previous free agent cycle are generally granted compensatory selections.
This year, the Falcons were given one of 31 selections awarded to 15 different teams. It is a pretty complicated process of how the league calculates who gets picks and how many — based on postseason honors, playing time, and compensation earned.
