Micah Abernathy went down with a knee injury in the first quarter of the Falcons Week 6 contest against the Panthers, and Raheem Morris said on Monday that he will miss significant time.
“Obviously, the rough one coming out of the game with the severe injury,” Morris said, “so we’ll probably be missing him for a significant amount of time.”
Abernathy was placed on the injured reserve and will be sorely missed on special teams, appearing in 70% of the snaps in the third phase, taking as many as 92%. He’s a special teams mainstay, and it’s an under-appreciated part of football.
Taking his roster spot, the Falcons signed Matt Hennessy, a former third-round draft pick who was eventually replaced at center by Drew Dalman. He spent parts of the 2020 and 2021 seasons starting, appearing in 41 games during his three seasons with the Falcons.
Among those moves, the Falcons also signed Dane Cruikshank and Coy Cronk to the practice squad.
