Falcons announce flurry of roster moves ahead of London trip

Ahead of their trip across the pond to London, the Falcons announced a flurry of roster moves in the wake of Troy Andersen’s potential season-ending injury.

Per the team’s website on Wednesday afternoon, the club added Andre Smith Jr. to the 53-man roster, which bolsters the linebacker unit. The Falcons just placed Andersen on the injured reserve with a pectoral injury.

Nate Landman is expected to step into that starting role with Tae Davis and Andre Smith as depth pieces. Some speculated that the Falcons restructured Jake Matthews’ contract, which created over $7 million in cap space, because Atlanta was eyeing a bigger move.

However, I was skeptical because of Landman’s sample size. Though it’s been a game and some change, the undrafted free agent has shown some chops. I’m pretty confident in the prospect of Landman starting the rest of the season.

The Falcons also released offensive tackle Isaiah Prince in a corresponding move, which makes sense after Atlanta signed Storm Norton off the Saints practice squad earlier in the week.

In addition, the Falcons also added Chris Blair to the practice squad. He spent the offseason with the club and was initially signed to the practice squad. Blair has plenty of experience (52 games) in the NFL.
