No one area on any team has struggled more than the Falcons pass rush over the last two decades. Not once since 2004 have they finished inside the top 10 in sacks, which continued in 2024, as they had the second fewest sacks in the league.
Atlanta’s first solution to the problem this offseason was the addition of former Georgia Bulldogs star Leonard Floyd. He’s a high quality addition that instantly becomes the Falcons most proven sack artist, but Floyd alone isn’t even close to enough to fix the issue. There has to be a lot more, and Atlanta continued adding today with the signing of defensive end Morgan Fox to a two-year contract worth $8.5 million, per the NFL Network’s Peter Schrager.Â
Fox has spent time with the Rams, Panthers, and Chargers, primarily serving as a rotational defensive lineman. His best season — as far as sacks — came in 2022 with the Panthers when he recorded 6.5. He then had 5.5 sacks with the Chargers in 2023 and 3.5 this past season.
Morgan Fox isn’t the sexy name Falcons fans have been praying for since the offseason began. The unit as a whole isn’t going to look much different with Fox and Loyd than it did with Matthew Judon and Lorenzo Carter. But as much as the Falcons need a game-changer across the defensive front, they also need bodies. Fox is a proven veteran that’s been durable over his entire career and is good for 3-6 sacks every season. There’s value in those type of guys, especially on a palatable $8.5 million contract over two years.
