The Falcons capped off their worst two-week stretch of the season yesterday by getting dismantled by Bo Nix and the Broncos. The defense was inept, allowing Nix to throw for 307 yards and four scores in essentially three quarters, and the offense wasn’t much better, mustering just six points.
The loss drops the Falcons to 6-5 on the season, making things much more interesting in the NFC South, which felt firmly in Atlanta’s grasp just a couple of weeks ago. However, ESPN’s FPI is still very high on the Falcons’ playoff chances, giving them a 72% shot of breaking a postseason drought that has gone on for more than a half-decade.
Some notable chance to make the playoffs numbers from FPI:
Falcons 72%
Cardinals 64%
Broncos 51%
Bucs 32%
Colts 32%
49ers 27%
Rams 15%
Dolphins 15%
Bengals 14%
Seahawks 14%— Seth Walder (@SethWalder) November 18, 2024
We live in a what have you done for me lately type of world, and what the Falcons have done lately is piss down their leg against the Saints in a game they should have won handily, followed by the worst loss of the season in Denver. Fans are rightfully questioning if anything has really changed in Atlanta under Raheem Morris. With that being said, the Falcons are still in a really good spot heading into their bye week.
Atlanta has a 1.5-game lead in the NFC South, which is really a 2.5-game lead, considering they will own the tiebreaker over both the Bucs and Saints at the end of the season. The bye week will also allow the Falcons to lick their wounds and, hopefully, get healthier, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, as they prepare for the stretch run.
Things may feel bleak now after such an embarrassing performance in Denver, but the Falcons couldn’t have asked to be put in a better position to end their postseason drought. It’s up to Raheem Morris and company to get this group re-focused because there’s a lot of work to be done.
