Before we begin the Michael Penix Jr. era in Atlanta, it seemed the perfect time to remind Falcons fans that Arthur Blank pushed out the greatest quarterback in franchise history in pursuit of Deshaun Watson.
I’m as excited as everyone to see Penix spin it in Mercedes Benz Stadium. The Falcons offense is a Ferrari that Kirk Cousins didn’t take out of second gear, but Penix’s physical talent should enable Zac Robinson to dial up plays that he couldn’t have dreamed of with the physically limited veteran.
However, I can’t be happy for too long, and it’s important to remember that Arthur Blank still deserves to be criticized for one of the worst things he’s ever done as the Falcons owner. No, I’m not talking about the man Arthur Blank. The man is one of the best humans this city has ever seen, evident in his philanthropic endeavors. We are talking about Arthur Blank, the NFL owner.
I have talked about this several times before, and I won’t stop. Arthur Blank and everyone involved in Atlanta’s pursuit of Watson should be condemned. Firstly, the off-the-field allegations are disturbing and would’ve/did alienate a portion of the fan base. Secondly, he was literally the worst quarterback in football before going down with a season-ending injury.
The Falcons, Arthur Blank in particular, better thank their lucky stars that the Browns forked over that fully guaranteed contract a few offseasons ago, or we could be in a similar position as Cleveland.
I’m happy we didn’t end up with Deshaun Watson, but Arthur Blank deserves to be ridiculed, and the entire Falcons organization should be ashamed that they pushed out Matt Ryan to pursue him.
Now, let the Hall of Fame career of Michael Penix Jr. begin!
