There’s a storm cloud over Atlanta. Everything that can go wrong has gone wrong for the Falcons.
Raheem Morris, Kirk Cousins, Terry Fontenot, and everyone is deserving of blame, but fans should expect things to get back on track this week against the Raiders on Monday Night Football.
Kirk Cousins hasn’t thrown a touchdown in four games. In that span, he’s thrown eight interceptions, but the Falcons offense has only really been held in check against the Broncos.
Against the Chargers, Vikings, and Saints, Cousins and Atlanta’s offense moved the ball at will in some instances. Between the 20s, the offense is among the better units in the league. Unfortunately, poor red zone offense and turnovers have held the unit back.
It’s quite simple. When the Falcons face bad defenses, Kirk Cousins balls out. When the Falcons face good defenses, Kirk Cousins folds. The only people who are surprised haven’t watched the veteran throughout his career. This is who Cousins has been his entire time in the NFL.
The final four games will present an opportunity for Cousins to beat up on some bad defenses. The Raiders, Giants, Commanders, and Panthers will enable Cousins to get back to his impressive stretch before the four-game losing streak.
And in that same breath, the defense should also be able to flex its muscles over the next two weeks against Las Vegas and New York, who boast two of the worst quarterbacks in the league. All this to say, nobody should be surprised when the Falcons, particularly Kirk Cousins, get back on track against the Raiders.
However, it’s still worth questioning whether the Falcons beating up on bad teams and losing to good ones is who they want to be. Arthur Blank seemingly just wants to be relevant, making the postseason. He’s more interested in a one-and-done playoff appearance than building a legitimate contender.
