The Falcons kicked off division play with a Week 4 victory over the Saints. With a quick turnaround against the Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football, Raheem Morris’ club could take the lead in the NFC South.
However, the talk of the town doesn’t surround their third Primetime game in four weeks. No, it surrounds Davante Adams, who is evidently on the trade market. The NFL trade deadline isn’t for another month, but talks between GMs are generally always ongoing.
With that being said, there’s no way Terry Fontenot should be inquiring about a trade for Adams. The All-Pro pass catcher would undoubtedly make the Falcons better, but at what cost?
It will cost a second-round pick and more, which honestly isn’t that big of a deal with Fontenot’s track record in the draft. What’s the kicker is his massive contract.
Adams is owed $13.5 million through the end of the season, so the Falcons would have to create cap space for 2024, but that’s not the worst part. He’s owed over $36 million in base salary for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
There’s also the possibility that he wouldn’t even want to come to Atlanta; in fact, New Orleans is among Adams’ preferred destinations, according to Adam Schefter. It’s no secret why, either.
Derek Carr and Davante Adams played together at Fresno State; it was a driving factor in the inital trade that sent Adams to Las Vegas from Green Bay. The Raiders moved off Carr after just one season, and Adams hasn’t had a reliable quarterback since.
Just like the Falcons, the Saints would have to do some cap maneuvering to fit Adams under the cap on his current contract. The Falcons are already up one game on the Saints in the division, but Adams would certainly make New Orleans a better team.
