Critical piece of Falcons offense downgraded at practice ahead of Eagles

NFL: AUG 23 Preseason Jaguars at Falcons

The Falcons are preparing for their first primetime game since Marcus Mariota became an internet meme throwing from his back on a rainy night in Charlotte against the Panthers.

The Falcons are coming off an embarrassing loss at home to begin the Raheem Morris era in which the Steelers didn’t score a single touchdown. The offense didn’t come out of the locker room for the second half as questions arose about Zac Robinson’s acumen.

It’s time to turn the page, though. The Falcons were never going to win the Super Bowl in Week 1, but now they must turn their attention to the Eagles to avoid an 0-2 start, something that few teams have overcome for a postseason berth.

Unfortunately, injuries may play a factor. For Thursday’s practice, Nate Landman and Antonio Hamilton did not participate, while Kaleb McGary was downgraded to limited.

McGary had a rough go of it against T.J. Watt on Sunday, but make no mistake about it, the Falcons are a much better team with him rather than the alternative.

Watt is one of the best defenders in the league, and the Falcons had a poor plan to combat him. Nobody should be rooting against McGary being out there; the offense would be worse without him.

Landman missing is also a big deal. He played a limited role against the Steelers, but the former undrafted free agent thrives when running downhill, and he looked good in Week 1. Not having him against a run heavy Eagles team would be a tremendous loss.

Hopefully, the extra day of rest will allow them to be 100% on the field Monday.
