With Calvin Ridley‘s suspension slated to last at least one year, the Falcons have some serious work to do to rebuild the receiving core. Atlanta can’t go into the 2022 season with Matt Ryan throwing to Frank Darby and Kyle Pitts; there has to be an influx of talent at the position. The free-agent class of wideouts is littered with potential Falcons, but one in particular is especially intriguing — Allen Robinson.
Robinson has spent much of his career catching passes from inadequate quarterbacks but still somehow puts up impressive numbers. In what was a woeful passing attack in Chicago, Robinson posted the worst numbers of his career in 2021; however, he shouldn’t shoulder the blame.
After back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020, Robinson only had 38 catches for 410 yards in 2021, as injuries cost him five games played. Robinson is still a WR1 in this league. The production he’s had with such terrible quarterback play is very telling of his abilities.
Pro Football Focus projects a three-year, $48 million contract for the former Bear, which might price him out of Atlanta as the Falcons are set to be mid-market shoppers in free agency. However, at least one former NFL wide receiver thinks it’s an excellent idea for Robinson to sign with the Falcons. Chad Johnson was even nice enough to text Arthur Blank to do what’s right.

Robinson can still beat elite cornerbacks, and his possession-dominant characteristics would do wonders for Arthur Smith’s offense. He can play both the X (on the line of scrimmage) and Z (off the line of scrimmage) positions, which would give Smith flexibility in alignments. It’s a long shot, but at least one famous face is vouching for Atlanta as a free-agent destination.
