Everyone expects the Falcons to take a defender in April’s draft. Whether it’s a pass rusher or a defensive back, nobody envisions Terry Fontenot drafting an offensive player for the fifth consecutive cycle, except for CBS Sports pundit Josh Edwards.
In his latest mock draft, Edwards has the Falcons drafting Penn State tight end Tyler Warren, which would essentially be to replace Kyle Pitts, who has been the subject of trade speculation this offseason.
“Warren is going to come as a surprise for some Falcons fans, but Sean McVay had been interested in Brock Bowers a year ago,” Edwards wrote. “I think about the type of player that Zac Robinson would want in that offense and Warren comes to mind quickly. I wonder if Kyle Pitts could be available in a trade this offseason.”
I think Atlanta would combust if Fontenot drafted Warren in the first round. Falcons fans would implode, but not because Warren is a bad prospect. In fact, I think he’s going to be very successful in the NFL. He’s a massive tight end who was the engine behind the Nittany Lions offense this past season, lining up all over the field in a variety of roles, including Wildcat quarterback.
However, if Fontenot were to trade the highest-drafted tight end in league history for pennies on the dollar just to take Tyler Warren, it would be a complete waste of draft capital.
One of the reasons why I don’t think the Falcons will trade Kyle Pitts is because they’ll have to replace him, and while Warren might be a better fit in Zac Robinson’s offense, it would be taking one step forward and two steps back.
