CB market continues to grow as A.J. Terrell remains without new deal

Falcons AJ Terrell Atlanta Falcons schedule release

The Falcons report to training camp this week, but there’s still a big to-do looming for Terry Fontenot this offseason — A.J. Terrell’s contract extension. To make matters worse, the cornerback market continues to grow.

While the Falcons have waited, others have not with their star corners. The Cowboys extended Trevon Diggs, followed by the Bears handing Jaylon Johnson a new deal. Now, it’s Tyson Campbell, who inked a four-year, $76.5 million extension with the Jaguars.

Jaire Alexander is the league’s highest-paid cornerback in terms of annual average salary at $21 million. Denzel Ward ($20.1 million) is second, followed by Jalen Ramsey ($20 million), Marlon Humphrey ($19.5 million), Marshon Lattimore ($19.4 million) and Diggs ($19.4 million).

The $19.125 million per year average puts Campbell a tick higher per year than the $19.1 million deal L’Jarius Sneed inked with the Titans. Terrell is certainly in line for something similar.

Campbell, a second-rounder, has recorded six interceptions, 30 passes defensed, 203 tackles and two forced fumbles in 43 games during his career. Yet, the Georgia product hasn’t quite matched his 2022 breakout campaign, though 2023 was marred by injuries.

Comparatively, A.J. Terrell has earned All-Pro honors, unlike Campbell. Terry Fontenot was always going to pay the former first-round pick. Going into his fifth-year option, Terrell’s free agency looms, which will only drive up the price.

The Falcons would be wise to get a deal done before the season. There’s an incentive for Terrell to also get it done as well, though. An injury would diminish his value entering free agency. Both sides need to hammer out a contract extension.
