The Braves have locked up most of their core to affordable long-term contracts, but the shortstop position is clouded by uncertainty. Dansby Swanson will become a free agent once the Braves’ playoff run comes to an end, and he’ll have no shortage of suitors coming off a career year. The Braves have made it clear they want him back, but this story feels all too familiar after what happened last offseason with Freddie Freeman.
If you follow the site, you know I want Swanson back. The dude bleeds Atlanta; seeing him in another jersey just wouldn’t feel right, and he fits with this team so perfectly. I think the two sides will eventually come to an agreement, but the Braves aren’t going to go into next season with Vaughn Grissom as their starting shortstop. They don’t even trust him enough to start over Orlando Arcia at this point. Atlanta will either re-sign Swanson or bring in another free agent. Thankfully, there should be several elite options to choose from.
Trea Turner will also be an unrestricted free agent, and joining him is Carlos Correa, who is opting out of his contract with the Twins.

He’s not alone, either. Xander Bogaerts also has a player option that he is expected to opt-out of this offseason.
If you remember, the Braves were rumored to have interest in Correa, and that was with Swanson already on the team. They’ll surely be in contact with his agent again this offseason. All of these guys are likely to sign mega-contracts, and while the Braves have been hesitant to hand out such deals in the past, things are changing in Atlanta in terms of payroll, so I fully expect one of these four players to be in a Braves uniform next year.
