There is no precedent for what’s happened to Atlanta sports in the past week. In a short period, the Braves moved on from Freddie Freeman, and the Falcons moved on from Ryan.
Ryan will undoubtedly be heralded in Atlanta long after he retires because he’s easily the best quarterback to play for the franchise. After losing out on Watson, the Falcons put themselves in a difficult situation. Pushing Ryan’s $7.5 million roster bonus back four days to facilitate a Watson trade forced the Falcons to either give into Ryan’s demands of a contract extension or to trade him. The trade nets valuable draft assets for an organization in desperate need of a kickstart in a rebuild.
The Falcons will now turn their attention to the veteran free agent market and quarterback class in the draft to replace Ryan.
