With news coming out yesterday that Allan Winans would be back up with the major-league club for his third start of the season, a corresponding move had to come today, and it has. Yonny Chirinos is heading to the 15-day IL with elbow inflammation.
The #Braves today recalled RHP Allan Winans to Atlanta and placed RHP Yonny Chirinos on the 15-day injured list, backdated to August 20, with right elbow inflammation.

I haven’t been shy about my disdain for Chirinos. The guy has been abysmal for the Braves in five starts, recording a 9.27 ERA. Somehow, Atlanta is 4-1 in those games, but he’s still offering next to nothing every time he toes the rubber. He’s not eating innings, and he’s not putting the team in a good position to win games. Hopefully, this isn’t a serious injury, but in all likelihood, this is just roster manipulation by the Braves. They don’t want to release Chirinos just yet, but it’s time to give Winans a longer look at the major league level.
The last time we saw Winans with the Braves, he tossed seven innings of shutout baseball with nine strikeouts. I’m not sure why he was optioned after the game in favor of Yonny Chirinos, but Winans will have a chance to duplicate that performance tonight against the same Mets team he dominated nine days ago. In two starts this season, Winans is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA.
