Braves welcome trade deadline acquisitions, option top prospect

MLB: JUL 24 Reds at Braves

Ahead of their series finale against the Brewers, the Braves trade acquisitions have reported to Milwaukee. Luke Jackson and Jorge Soler have been added to the roster, while Bryce Elder and Nacho Alvarez have been optioned.

Elder just spun a gem of a game on Tuesday night, going 6.1 frames of one-run ball, striking out seven and surrendering one base on balls. He came into the contest with a 6.35 ERA in 39.2 innings, so this was a breath of fresh air for the Texas product.

Alvarez had a rough go of it in his first stint at the major league level, but it was a cup of coffee, and he’s still got a potentially bright future. He’ll likely have a legitimate shot at making the major league roster next year if he continues to impress at the Triple-A level. If his defense proves serviceable at shortstop, that’s the quickest way to make the roster. Whit Merrifield is expected to step in at second base until Ozzie Albies returns.

As for Soler and Jackson, the two familiar faces join a Braves team that desperately needs to find some consistency. Soler is expected to slot into the leadoff role, where his on-base percentage should improve the overall effectiveness of the lineup. Jackson, on the other hand, should be competing for a postseason roster spot as the bullpen currently stands. It’s the strongest unit of the Braves team, and nothing should be handed to anyone other than the high-leverage guys.
