A Braves veteran is drawing interest from multiple teams in free agency. According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, Ken Giles is garnering interest on a minor league deal.
In parts of eight seasons, the veteran reliever has compiled a 2.71 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 484 strikeouts over 355.1 innings pitched. Most recently, the righty spent the 2024 campaign with the Braves Triple-A affiliate, where he struggled mightily.
In 42 appearances, he had a 6.28 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 1.9 home runs allowed per nine innings and 58 strikeouts in 38.2 innings pitched for the Stripers. His most recent MLB stint came in 2022 with the Mariners, but he’s best remembered for his impressive 2019 campaign with the Blue Jays in which he logged a 1.87 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 23 saves.
The Braves were hoping that a flier on Giles would turn into a meal ticket, a standard low-cost, high-upside move that Alex Anthopoulos has become known for as Atlanta’s president of baseball operations. Unfortunately, Giles gave out too many free passes and home runs.
Anthopoulos has been quite busy this offseason, just not in the way Atlanta fans had hoped. It’s been either cost-cutting moves or acquisitions to bolster the depths of the organization. So, the decision not to bring Giles back should tell you all you need to know about how the club feels about the veteran.
