Seemingly out of nowhere, the Braves were named by several MLB insiders as a potential suitor for Oakland Athletics catcher Sean Murphy. It started a couple of days ago when Ken Rosenthal reported Atlanta had checked in on Murphy, then ramped up quickly last night when Mark Feinsand tweeted out a deal was close to being completed and the Braves are considered frontrunners.
The Athletics appear to be getting close to a trade of C Sean Murphy, per source. The Braves are considered the frontrunners to acquire the former Gold Glove winner, though other teams remain in the mix.

Like most people, I was confused. The club already has three high-quality catchers on their roster, including two that were All-Stars just a season ago. Trading away what little prospect capital they have for another backstop makes close to zero sense.
Well, it appears Feinsand got his facts mixed up. Not too long after his initial tweet, he reported that the Braves aren’t in on Murphy, listing the Cardinals, Rays, Guardians, and Red Sox as potential suitors.
Update on Sean Murphy: it still appears Oakland is close to a trade, but the Braves are NOT going to be the acquiring team, per source. The Cardinals, Rays, Guardians and Red Sox are among the teams that have been connected to Murphy in recent weeks.

Not sure where Feinsand received his initial information, but as I said soon after the report, the Braves weren’t going to acquire Murphy. Now we know it won’t be happening.
