The trade deadline approaches rapidly, and the Braves have been silent thus far, but nobody should be surprised if a flurry of deals comes in at the buzzer, as Alex Anthopoulos is prone to do.
One new name linked to Atlanta is Blake Snell, who is drawing interest from several clubs, including the Braves, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
“Many teams, including the Yankees, Orioles, Astros and Braves, are showing interest in Snell, who has posted a 0.75 ERA over four starts in July.”
Snell is coming off a Cy Young campaign, but his market wasn’t as robust as he and his super agent Scott Boras thought, so he settled for a two-year deal with the Giants.
However, much of the 2024 season has been marred by injuries and struggles. His free agency lingered, forcing him to ramp up quickly to start the season. Snell spent a couple of stints on the injured list after just six starts in which he posted a 9.51 ERA.
Since returning, Blake Snell looks much more like the Cy Young he was a season ago. Over his last four starts since coming off the IL, he has allowed two earned runs across 24 innings (0.75 ERA) with 30 strikeouts to seven walks.
For the Braves, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to trade for a guy like Snell, unless the Reynaldo Lopez injury is deemed serious. Max Fried is expected to rejoin the major league club in the not-too-distant future, but if Lopez is expected to be out for an extended period, Anthopoulos may see a guy like Blake Snell as an intriguing target.
