The non-tender deadline was earlier this month, which resulted in several major-league caliber players becoming free agents. Because there’s a lockout, players can’t sign major-league deals, so some of these guys will have to wait a while. Others, however, could be interested in a minor-league contract and are free to sign whenever. Follow this link if you missed the National League non-tender candidates that the Braves could be interested in.
Matthew Boyd
Of all the players that were non-tendered in both leagues, Boyd is the one that intrigues me the most. He’s a pitcher who has drawn a lot of interest at multiple trade deadlines, but the Tigers never budged, a move I’m sure they regret now. Boyd had a forgetful 2020, but he pitched really well last season before going down with an injury and undergoing surgery. He’s not expected to return until the middle of next season at the earliest, but that could make him an excellent cheap flier option for the Braves, who are in need of some starting pitching depth.
Juan Minaya
Minaya’s inclusion amongst players that were non-tendered is shocking. He posted great numbers for the Twins, recording a 2.48 ERA with a 9.7 K/9 across 40 innings. Given the Braves’ current lack of right-handed relief options, they should definitely be interested, especially if he’s willing to take a minor league deal.
