Already short-handed without two of their best players in Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuña Jr., the Braves really can’t afford another major injury if they want to chase down the Phillies in the NL East and make some noise in October. Unfortunately, they’ll have to figure out how to win without Max Fried for at least the next couple of weeks as well.
The #Braves today recalled LHP Dylan Dodd to Atlanta and placed LHP Max Fried on the 15-day injured list, backdated to July 18, with left forearm neuritis.

There is no arm injury for a pitcher that should be taken lightly. Apparently, Max Fried felt some discomfort before making an appearance during the All-Star break. It resulted in the team running some tests, which all came back clean. However, the Braves aren’t taking any chances. Fried will be shut down for a bit, but the hope is this won’t be a long absence.
Max Fried initially felt some minor discomfort prior to the All-Star Game.
He underwent an MRI on Friday. It was clean and revealed no structural issues.
He'll be shut down from throwing for a while and the #Braves are hopeful this won't be a long stint on the IL.

With everything that’s happened to the Braves on the injury front this season, I’m not going to hold my breath for Fried’s return. It could be a little while, and the Braves are going to have to hold their heads above water without one of the best pitchers in the game. Over his last 16 starts, Fried boasts a 2.36 ERA, leading to his second All-Star appearance.
However, if there is any glass half full perspective to take from this situation, at least it happened now instead of two months from now. Max Fried still has plenty of time to recover and be fully healthy for a potential postseason run. It also serves as a stark reminder to Alex Anthopoulos of one of the worst case scenarios. It might be wise for the Braves to place an emphasis on adding another worthwhile starter as insurance before the trade deadline.
