For you gamblers out there, spring training is only five weeks away, so it’s time to start thinking about who you should be laying your money on to win each division. Here’s how the odds look as of now:
Here are the division favorites with 5 weeks before spring training, and most of top free agents unsigned, per @betonline_ag:
AL Central: #WhiteSox: 4/5
AL East: #Yankees: 4/7
AL West: #Athletics: 11/10
NL Central: #Reds: 9/4
NL East: Atlanta: 3/2
NL West: #Dodgers: 5/8— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) January 14, 2021
As you can see, the Braves have the worst odds to win their division outside of the Reds. A little disrespectful for a team that has won three straight NL East titles and came just a run short of the World Series, right?
Well, I wouldn’t go that far. The Braves should still undoubtedly be the favorites based on history, but they have some holes to fill this offseason. Meanwhile, the Mets and Nationals have been busy, with New York obviously making the blockbuster trade for Francisco Lindor, and Washington adding power sluggers Josh Bell and Kyle Schwarber to their lineup. The Nats are hoping their rotation will be at full strength next season as well.
Given how many marquee players are still free agents, it’s probably a bit too early to lay a wager on who will win the NL East. However, if you trust Alex Anthopolous and believe he still has a few tricks left up his sleeve this offseason (like I do), these might be the best odds you’ll get for the Braves winning the division.
