I never thought there was much debate, but the Braves made it official just minutes ago — Max Fried will be the team’s Opening Day starter in 2022.

Fried has been the ace of the Braves staff for a couple of years now. He nearly won the Cy Young award during the COVID shortened 2020 campaign, and he followed it up with 5.4 bWAR in 2021 — a year in which he finished the season as the hottest pitcher in baseball.
There was some debate about whether Charlie Morton might be the Opening Day starter, but after suffering a broken fibula in his last real game, I always thought that was a long shot. The Braves got this one right; Max Fried is the ace of this staff, and he deserves the ball in Game 1 of the season.
