After sending Jared Shuster to AAA yesterday, the Braves have made another move and added Max Fried to the 15-day IL.
The #Braves today recalled RHP Bryce Elder to Atlanta and placed LHP Max Fried on the 15-day injured list, backdated to April 1, with a strained left hamstring.

The good news is that Fried’s IL stint is retroactive, so it will only be 12 days instead of 15 if he fully recovers. He tweaked his hamstring covering first on a ground ball. Bryce Elder was the obvious replacement after Ian Anderson got rocked in his first AAA start of the season.
Elder has had some quality starts, but he’ll have his work cut out for him against the Cardinals. Hopefully, the offense can continue to carry the team with Fried and Wright sidelined.
Bryce Edler posted a 3.17 ERA and 1.24 WHIP over 54 innings last season. His peak was a complete game shutout of the Nationals in September of 2022. He’s a strike-thrower, and I’m excited to see what he can do over the next couple of weeks.
Because Elder is taking the place of Max Fried, it means Jared Shuster cannot be called back up for his next scheduled start, which is another wrinkle to this move. He has to stay in Gwinnett for at least 10 days. Given the Braves don’t have many other options to choose from, I expect them to roll with an opener every 5th day until Kyle Wright or Max Fried is ready to return to the rotation.
