May 29th was a dark day for the Braves organization, as Marcell Ozuna was arrested in a horrid case of domestic abuse. The 30-year-old outfielder, who just signed a four-year, $65 million contract with the Braves this past offseason, was charged with assault by strangulation, which is a felony, and misdemeanor battery. Obviously, he hasn’t played a game since the arrest and won’t until the legal process is completed and an investigation is done by the league.
Here’s a brief explanation of what exactly Ozuna was arrested for that afternoon, via ESPN.com:
At 12:26 p.m. Saturday, Sandy Springs police responded to a 911 call and entered Ozuna’s home after hearing screaming inside, according to the department’s account of the incident. Officers, the release said, “witnessed the suspect grabbing the victim by the neck and throwing her against a wall. … In addition to the strangulation attempts, the suspect also struck the victim with his arm which had a cast from a previous injury.”
Pretty brutal, and if that report is proven true, there’s a good chance Ozuna never plays in a Braves uniform again, even if the team can’t get out from under his contract. However, there’s two sides to every story, and though Ozuna has remained quiet since the incident, he broke his silence last Friday and provided an interesting statement.

There’s no mincing words in that statement; Ozuna essentially calls out the police for lying. Fortunately, since the police reportedly caught him in the act, there should be body cam footage of the entire incident that will hopefully reveal Ozuna’s innocence. Either way, this is an incredibly ugly situation, and we likely won’t find out the truth for a while, given how long the legal process generally takes.
