Braves make flurry of roster moves ahead of series against Mets

MLB: JUN 04 Braves at Diamondbacks

It had been reported earlier today that right-handed pitching prospect Roddery Muñoz is receiving the call to the majors, and that has been confirmed by the team’s official Twitter account now. He will join the active roster, and in a corresponding move, Michael Soroka has been optioned back to Gwinnett.

The team also announced they have claimed infielder Lucas Williams off waivers and added Max Fried to the 60-day IL.

The #Braves today claimed INF Lucas Williams off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred LHP Max Fried to the 60-day injured list. The club today also optioned RHP Michael Soroka to the Stripers.

The decision to move Max Fried to the 60-day IL always seemed inevitable. The Braves were just waiting until it was necessary. He will be eligible to return in early July.

The most important aspect of these transactions is the decision to option Soroka back to Gwinnett. I think it’s the right move; his control still needs some work if he wants to have success at the major-league level. The decision was also made much easier by AJ Smith-Shawver’s performance on Sunday.

The 20-year-old star prospect looks ready to contribute to the Braves in a big way. We saw what he could do out of the bullpen, but what about the rotation? With Soroka now in Gwinnett, there’s an open spot for him to slot into. His progression through the Braves’ system has been nothing short of sensational. Now, it looks like he could be a part of the rotation for the time being, and he has the talent to stick.
