After today’s split squad games, the Braves made several cuts to their Spring Training roster. The club announced Dylan Dodd and Hurston Waldrep have been optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett. They also reassigned Enoli Paredes and Royber Salinas to minor-league camp.
The only slight surprise out of this bunch is Hurston Waldrep. He’s a top-five prospect in the organization with a very high ceiling as a pitcher. Given how many spots are up for grabs on the pitching staff, it would have been fun to see more of him after he made his first Spring Training appearance today, tossing a scoreless inning.
However, while the Braves could find a role for Waldrep later in the season, whether it’s as a starter or reliever, fine-tuning his stuff and command in Gwinnett is best for his development. Waldrep’s value is highest as a starting pitcher, and it’s far too early in his professional career to transform him into a full-time reliever, even if that’s a role he takes on for the Braves later in the year.
